The noucentista house: single-family architecture in catalonia (1913-1932)
The noucentista house: single-family architecture in catalonia (1913-1932)
The nineteenth-century architects also worried about the surroundings of the house, both of the gardens and the urban planning, and planned garden cities throughout Catalonia, such as S’Agaró and Terramar. At the same time, they also defended a certain type of domestic interiors, in which they stand out the furniture and the objects of artisan production. Altogether, the noucentista house wanted to express its ideals of modernity, Mediterraneanity and civility. This book presents a selection of eighteen houses to show to what extent the political and cultural substratum that shaped the nineteenth century movement also created a certain architecture and decoration of domestic interiors at the service of the new Catalan bourgeoisie. During the two decades of the Noucentisme, the architecture of single-family houses was also a manifestation of the impetus of modernization that advocated this idea, in order to bring Catalonia closer to the trends of architectural renovation that were taking place everywhere from Europe.
